The Gladys Valley Marine Studies Building is a new 74,000 SF state of the art classroom and laboratory building on OSU's Hatfield Marine Science Center campus.
Located in Newport, Oregon, this 3-story core building includes research and teaching labs, classrooms, and office space. It connects to a 2-story structure that includes community space, a 250-person auditorium, an “innovation lab” and other facilities.
The building can sustain a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and the ensuing tsunami. A ramp leads from ground level to the top of the auditorium, and from there to the roof of the main three-story structure. At a height of 47 feet, the building’s roof is designed to serve as a vertical evacuation site for more than 900 people, should a tsunami strike the area.
In addition to housing Marine Studies Initiative programs, the new building provides headquarters for OSU’s nationally recognized Marine Mammal Institute and its marine genetics and genomics programs.
